I’ve got more exciting news! How Do I Sexy? has been short-listed for Editors Canada’s 2025 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence, which honours an exceptional editor who played an important role in the success of a project completed in English or French. More specifically, my editor, Andrea Zanin, has been recognized for the tremendous work that they did with helping me ensure that my book was everything I desired it to be.
When I sent in my manuscript for How Do I Sexy? to Thornapple Press in the Fall of 2023 it was in pretty rough shape. I’d never written a book entirely by myself before, and it showed. But Thornapple is an indie publisher that invests in it’s writers and they were willing to put a lot of work into my growth.
Andrea was instrumental to that process! Through a few rounds of substantive edits they provided invaluable guidance, encouragement, and insight designed to foster the development of my writing skills and bring out my author’s voice. As a result, the book feels very authentically me and it serves are a testament to not just my personal journey as a trans queer, but to my decade of experience in trans activism and advocacy, as well as to the experiences of many others that I was able to share in it.
With my next book, Carry On: Unpacking Your Internalized Transphobic and Queerphobic Baggage, entering into the substantive editing phase now, I’m thrilled to be working with Andrea once again. I can’t wait to see how the book evolves with their expertise and aid.
I can think of no one more deserving of the 2025 Tom Fairley Award than Andrea Zanin!
